What Dots Won't Do At Six P.M.
ServiceTitan's contractor survey shows saved hours without matching profit, and OpenAI's Dots is a personal assistant, not a business phone line.

Contractors are saving time with AI, and fewer than half of those users can point to more profit or revenue. OpenAI’s new assistant, Dots, does a different job from the one that would cover a ringing phone after hours.
ServiceTitan’s contractor report: hours saved, dollars unclear
On September 29, ServiceTitan released a contractor AI report. Trade press coverage quotes active AI use rising from 46% in December 2025 to 52% in September 2026. Among users, 66% save at least 3 hours a week. Only 47% report better profitability, and 43% report more revenue. ServiceTitan sells software to these contractors, so read this as a vendor survey.
Saved time becomes money when the tool connects to the next step. A faster estimate does nothing while it sits in a drafts folder. The follow-up call and the booked job are where the hour pays off.
The report also lists why contractors experiment with AI. Hiring gaps lead at 37%. Off-hours support follows at 34%. Owners want someone to answer when the office is closed.
OpenAI Dots: an assistant for the owner
Also on September 29, OpenAI announced Dots at its DevDay event. TechCrunch describes always-on agents that pursue your goals in the background with minimal oversight. You reach them through ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams, with text messages coming. They roll out first to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users.
None of the coverage I read mentions Dots answering a business phone line. A caller at 6 p.m. wants a quote or a service slot from your company, using your prices, your calendar, and your rules. That is the off-hours support contractors told ServiceTitan they wanted. If you want to see what those calls cost you, the missed-call calculator takes two minutes.
One tool helps you. The other speaks for your company to strangers. Know which gap you have before you buy either.
