The Operator's AI Brief
Free In Dollars, Expensive In Hours
Open source phone AI costs nothing to license and plenty to maintain, and Forrester expects agencies to cut staff as AI takes over execution work.

The audio is AI-produced: an AI clone of Jon's voice and an AI co-host, reading a script built from the sources below.
Three open source projects now let a business run its own phone AI instead of paying a vendor every month. Running one costs nothing in license fees and a lot in hours, which is why a small shop should wait.
Self-hosted phone AI
A scan of GitHub on September 26 turned up AgentLine, Patter, and Dograh. All three aim at the same job: replace the paid platform that answers your calls with software you host yourself.
A supply yard could build this. I would not tell one to. Before I picked the voice platform I build on for clients, I evaluated every major vendor. The model that talks to the caller is rarely what breaks. The plumbing behind it breaks. The webhook that tells your calendar a call happened drops a small share of the time on every platform, paid or self-hosted.
On a paid platform, I handle that with a scheduled check that catches any call the webhook missed. A five-person shop on an open source stack has to write that fallback itself and then maintain it each time one of the three projects ships an update. Nobody on a small crew has a spare job like that. I will keep watching these projects. Today they suit a company with a development team.
Forrester on agency headcount
Forrester forecast that marketing agencies will cut 15% of their headcount in 2026, up from 8% in 2025, according to Forbes. The driver is that AI now does the execution work agencies used to staff up for. Agencies are charging for judgment and automating the rest.
For an owner, that makes the hourly bill a fair thing to question. I do not sell hours at Rylo. I audit what is broken in a business first, then build a system that fixes that one thing.
Cheap software and cheap labor both have a hidden price. Check where the hours land before you sign.
