The Operator's AI Brief
The Eighteen-Cent Decision
A cheap classifier can sort your inbox before an expensive model sees it, and a vendor's missed-call numbers give you a reason to count your own.

Much of what you hand to AI is a yes-or-no call: is this email urgent, is this lead worth a phone call. A new model built for that job costs a small fraction of what a general-purpose model charges. Separately, a call-answering vendor put a dollar range on missed calls, which gives you a reason to count your own.
A model that decides instead of writes
On September 15, 2026, TypeSafe AI released early access to Jev, a model that returns a label, a score, or a yes or no with a probability, according to VentureBeat. VentureBeat lists the price at $0.042 per million input tokens, with free output.
Nate Herk posted a short video on September 21 titled “This New AI Makes Decisions for 18 Cents.” The title overstates it. A write-up on how to use Jev describes the example as 1,700 emails sorted for 18 cents total, an illustration the author did not test. I have not tested it either.
For a small business, the pattern matters more than this one product. Put a cheap classifier in front of the expensive model. Let it sort the inbox, score the lead, and flag the urgent call. Hand only the cases that need judgment to Claude. I already build intake this way.
What a missed call costs
CallBird AI sells an AI receptionist, so treat its numbers as vendor data. On a page dated December 25, 2025, it says 62% of calls to contractors go unanswered while the crew is on a job site. It puts the average small contractor’s loss at $45,000 to $120,000 a year, from data on more than 1,200 contractors.
The seller of the fix wrote that page, and the data predates this post by months. Your own call log will tell you more than their average does.
A cheap sorter and a call-answering service both pay off only if you know how many emails and how many calls you actually have.
